Shoulder diamond rings usually have smaller diamonds in the upper sections of the band, often from the mid point on the ring’s circumference to the top of the shoulder where the ring band meets the main setting. The number of diamonds required to fill this area of course is as varied as ring designs are. There can be as few as one on each side or more than fifty in some really large rings.
When shoulder diamonds are used in the band they can do one of two things: either enhance the main diamond or detract from it. It is important to use the correct balance of both the size and number of diamonds, in order to compliment the central stone rather than compete with it.When designing an engagement ring, it is also important to consider how the shoulder diamonds will look when a wedding ring is placed next to it. This is something that can be missed during the initial excitement of ring selection. For some, the look of two diamond set bands may be too much, while others love the look of multiple bands set with diamonds and even add a further diamond set eternity band to complete the set. Which look you prefer is a decision that should be considered early in the process.
Diamond types used in the shoulder section of a ring can be just about any cut shape. However, as it is not possible to bend a diamond, some ring designs will dictate that a certain diamond cut must be used in preference to others if diamonds are to be added to the shoulder of any given style of engagement ring. The most versatile diamond is the round brilliant cut for this, as these can be supplied in sizes as small as 0.5 of a mm and imbedded in pretty much any curve or shape with sufficient width to accommodate it, whereas a princess cut or baguette diamond cannot be set in a curve without leaving odd unsightly gaps in-between the diamonds.
Below are a few of the shoulder diamond rings we have made over the years. If you have any questions about any particular style, or would like to make an appointment, please do not hesitate to contact us.
