Unusual Engagement Ring? This One Sure is a Big Rock!

In the news this week was a fantastic story about a very special hand made engagement ring. An unusual engagement ring that very few people would have.

Just about everyone who comes to see us wants a unique engagement ring. This is why they come to see us: every ring that we custom make is one of a kind. And most of us would also love to have a huge rock to put in our unusual engagement ring. Not because we are flashy or greedy, but simply because a beautiful big rock is just that: beautiful. And there are not many amongst us who don’t like beautiful things.

This week, one lucky girl has just been given everything that she wants – literally! I know you are thinking that this is just another celeb story about a ginormous Hollywood engagement ring, but it’s not.

An Unusual Engagement Ring Hand Carved out of a Meteorite!

So what is so special about this unique engagement ring? One very enterprising and creative guy decided that he really wanted to give his wife to be an amazing ring that he had made himself. An unusual engagement ring that no one else in the world would have. So he carved her ring out of a meteorite! He bought the lump of rock for just $140 and then spent hours and hours drilling and carving it out to form it into a ring.

As you can see in the pics, he did have a bit of a mishap on the way, with the natural shape of the meteorite meaning that while he was drilling the shape of the ring out, one wall of the ring became too thin. While shaving the outside shape of the ring with a grinder, the wall nearly snapped through. But he has made this mistake into a real feature of the ring.

Sure, this ring is not to everyone’s tastes. But that’s the whole point: he wants his fiancé to have an unusual engagement ring. And that she certainly has. There are a few issues with wearing the ring everyday: being iron it will rust. But there are some suggestions by contributors to the imgur site where he posted images of the process that he went through to make the ring that might help make it a little more practical.

Everyday wear and tear is always something we consider when designing an engagement ring. The ring must be both beautiful and practical. Practicality is something that is often overlooked by people when they are gathering ideas for what they would like their engagement ring to look like. People often request very fine bands and super fine claws on a ring. The problem with going too fine, is that the ring then becomes too flimsy. When it is too flimsy, it will bend and buckle with everyday wear. Claws that are too thin will snap and diamonds can be lost.

The Big Question is: What Did She Think of the Ring?

So I guess you all want to know – what was the verdict? What did she think of the ring? She absolutely loves it! How wonderful. Congratulations to them both.
